Concept
The renovation of the Main building aimed to create a showpiece building which shows innovation, sustainability and technology. A new volume is added towards the West to make itself visible from the entrance of the campus (See Atrium concept).
The Atrium contributes to the design as a visual space, circulation, and daylight provided by its skylight roof. In order to avoid overheating during summer, external shadings are located in the roof, to be automatized during peak hours (See View of the atrium).
The “Old” building façade towards East and West has external rotating louvers made out of perforated aluminum, in order to provide natural light to the interior space even when the louvers are closed, avoiding the unwanted solar gains. The “New” building has a double skin façade with external vents in order to provide air flow to the new cavity. The mechanism of this façade differs depending on the season.

Building Physics
The concept of the building not only creates an interaction space among the users but also provides a high quality indoor environment. The daylight system is the most important aspect in the design. As part as the daylight system light shelves are located in the east façade and louvers with daylight redirection on the west façade. A daylight sensor turns on the artificial LED lights depending on light admittance.
